Management Reporter

Management Reporter

If you have worked with Microsoft Dynamics GP, SL or AX, you are likely familiar with Management Reporter (MR). The financial reporting tool comes together with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP). This tool is a real-time financial reporting app. that quickly generates Profit and Loss (P&L) statements, balance sheets and cash flow reports.

Users who have been around may recognize FRx before Microsoft officially retired it in January 2011 and introduced Management Reporter 2012 as a solution. It offers more advanced performance, stability, the familiar Microsoft platform, and many new features. You also get more flexibility when designing reports and dimension filters with Management Reporter’s use of SQL databases. Another significant advantage over FRx is that Management Reporter supports up to 20,000-dimension rows instead of FRx’s mere 8,000 GL rows.

Management Reporter 2012 integrates directly with your general ledger in Dynamics GP. Consequently, you acquire real-time financial reporting that permits you to create, generate, secure, and publish financial reports like Balance Sheets, Profit & Loss, and Actual vs Budget variance reports.

Moving to Management Reporter requires a detailed plan and a knowledgeable team. BHC Group’s ERP consultants are highly trained in moving organizations to Management Reporter from FRx. We’ve helped many businesses prepare their data and can help make your transition to Management Reporter seamless and worry-free. In addition, we provide solution management through a guided, expeditious process in resolving your support request, including On-Demand and After-Hours Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is FRx being replaced by Management Reporter?

The future of the Microsoft systems environment is a 64-bit operating system that FRx did not support. This is the most important reason why Management Reporter is replacing FRx. Furthermore, the design of Management Reporter was a bundled module with the Dynamics ERP solution, which was why it replaced FRx. Management Reporter has shortcomings like not having all the standard features of FRx, but the versions of MR have evolved from their original design.

Q. What are the differences between FRx and Management Reporter?

The most notable difference between FRx and MR is in the back end. FRx is an access database that stores reports and specification sets compared to Management Reporter, an SQL database stored on your SQL server with your Dynamics and ERP database. When you first log into Management Reporter, you will notice the similarities between the two and that they look much the same; however, the terminology is different. Here are some of the differences in the terminology: in FRx, there is a Specification Set that is called a Building Block Group in Management Reporter, Row formats are Row Definition, Column Layout changes to Column Definition, Reporting tree is a Reporting Tree Definition, and Drill Down Viewer is Report Viewer. In addition, the format headings for a Row format are slightly different in the Row Definition in Management Reporter; there is a format override and row modifier, and the link to the GL is now named Link to Financial Dimension, which is essentially the same thing.

Q. Is everything in FRx still available in Management Reporter?

This is the most often asked question. Some things are done in FRx that cannot be done in Management Reporter. The primary item in FRx and not in MR is a report that cannot go directly when generated into Excel or a printer. When generated, all reports for Management Reporter first go into the report viewer, from where the user can export to Excel or print.

Q. What is new in Management Reporter that was not in FRx?

The comment field on a report within the report viewer is one of the best features in MR that is not in FRx. This feature permits the report designer and the user to have a conversation through comments directly on the report in the report viewer. In addition, when running a new report version, the user can copy the notes from one version to the next. This feature eliminates a lot of back and forth through email during the reporting process. Another feature that is not new but has been upgraded in Management Reporter is the missing accounts report. In Management Reporter, it is much easier for a user to see if accounts are missing from reports.
