I’m Sven Tapp, and I like to say I didn’t choose my career – it chose me. Every time I took on a business role, the data assets I created to run my business garnered attention, leading to my being promoted into more analytical and strategic positions.
For over 20 years, FP&A has been at the core of my work, and I’ve continuously complemented my skill set with data analytics, business intelligence, and business process design – all to enhance the strategic impact of FP&A. Most memorable project and why:
I designed a daily financial reporting system that consolidated data from various operational systems for four profit centers and multiple cost centers into a single, timely company-wide view.
The ten-person Finance team struggled to approach this project, yet I instinctively knew how to design and build it. Partnering with IT, we delivered a fully automated solution within six months, exceeding the president’s expectations. The system became a showpiece highlighting the company’s strategy of data-centric decision-making. But for me the real win was realizing my superpower – seeing clarity in complexity and transforming data into valuable assets. That was the moment I knew I had found my calling.
Who is your favourite superhero, and why?
Putting aside his womanizing, murderous career, and heavy drinking (we all have flaws, right?), I’m a big fan of Ian Fleming’s literary James Bond – not for the action, but for his unwavering loyalty to the mission, grit, resourcefulness, and reluctance to be the hero.
